Lauren Harnevious, a student in the Associate Degree Nursing program at Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC), was chosen as one of the top four finalists in the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) program sponsored by the Technical College System of Georgia.

“It was a great achievement for Lauren to make it this far in the competition,” said Ellen Terrell, Education Transition Coordinator at SWGTC. “The GOAL winners from around the state represent the best and the brightest in technical education and we could not have been any prouder to have SWGTC represented by Lauren. She did an outstanding job.”

“Lauren came to SWGTC to earn her GED after she finished her home school studies and then enrolled so that she could earn her Associates Degree in nursing,” said Terrell. “She believes in technical education and has a wonderful story to share with others about how technical education can change your life.”

Harnevious was originally chosen from 16 nominees at SWGTC and continued on to represent SWGTC at the regional level against other GOAL winners from technical colleges in the southern section of Georgia. The top three from each of Georgia’s three regions then went on to compete for the state GOAL title. After the interview process, Harnevious was named one of the top four in the competition.

While in Atlanta, the group of GOAL winners attended instructional seminars to help them hone job interview skills, leadership abilities, career success, and other related topics.

“I was thrilled to have made it this far in the competition. This was a great opportunity for me,” said Harnevious. “I am so happy that I was able to be a part of it and am very proud to have had the chance to represent SWGTC. I believe in technical education and am so grateful for the experiences being part of the GOAL program has provided for me.”

The GOAL program is in its 39th year and was the first program of its kind in the nation. SWGTC has had two state GOAL winners in the past: Barbara Spears Jenkins in 1998 and Nikki Robinson in 1990.
