Students from Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) are on a mission to make a difference in the lives of a group of children at Scott Elementary School. The college students are serving as mentors for children in kindergarten through fifth grade in a program called, “iStand for Success”. This is the third year of the program.

Asha Dillard, Student Activities Coordinator at SWGTC said, “The iStand for Success program has been very enjoyable for our students. It has given them the opportunity to be role models for these children and also become their friends.”

“We appreciate the support and cooperation we received from Scott School and Principal Tret Witherspoon. “We strongly believe this program is very beneficial to the children and the mentors and we look forward to continuing this partnership with SWGTC.”

“This is a wonderful program and so rewarding for me to be a part of it,” said Kim Powell, who has served as a mentor in the program since its inception. “It is a fun way to become involved in a child’s life and find out what interests them, what they aspire to be, and be their friend.”

Scott School student MarQuasia Watson, who is mentored by Powell said, “I really like being a part of this. I liked getting to see my mentor today and telling her what I did over the summer.”

The mentors and Scott students will meet twice a month throughout the school year. “They will have lunch together, play on the playground, play board games, and even read together as part of the accelerated reader program,’ said Witherspoon.

“The purpose of this program is to help guide these students and offer them support and even assistance with school work,” said Dr. Jeanine Long, Career Services Director at SWGTC. “Most importantly, the mentors will serve as positive role models for these children.”
