Nursing Recruitment Scholarship Being Offered at SWGTC

In an effort to attract more students into the Associate Degree Nursing program, a new “Growing Nurses Recruitment Scholarship” has been established by Archbold Medical center in support of Southwest Georgia Technical College’s Invest in the Vision Major Gifts Campaign. Thirty $1000 scholarships will be awarded annually to deserving students who desire a career as a nurse and who are committed to attending SWGTC  in order to complete the requirements for obtaining an Associate’s Degree in Nursing.

“A shortage of nurses exists locally, statewide, and nationally and this scholarship will hopefully attract more students into the ADN program,” said SWGTC President Dr. Glenn Deibert. “These scholarships are a great tool for us in attracting bright and ambitious individuals into this program, which can guarantee graduates a job once they complete their program.”

SWGTC Nursing graduate Jenna Heath.“We are in the midst of an unprecedented nursing shortage,” said Tammy Bryant, nursing instructor at SWGTC. “This trend is expected to continue in the future and the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics expects there to be more than one million vacant nursing positions by the year 2014.  “The ‘Growing Nursing Scholarship’ at SWGTC will help address this shortage in our community and the students receiving this scholarship will have funds for books, tuition, and uniforms, thus relieving some of the financial burden of going to college,” said Bryant.

“This scholarship will assist some students who may not have had the funds to get started towards a career in nursing.  Nursing is a career of the heart in which one has to have respect for the patients and their families. It takes a special person to be a nurse and this scholarship, which is available to high school students, LPN Bridge and Generic Students can assist Southwest Georgia Technical College in making the difference in someone’s life and help alleviate the shortage of nurses,” she added.
