Georgia's Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant

Beginning in Fall Semester 2013, students in specific programs of study at Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) will have a new opportunity to gain extra financial assistance towards tuition and fees. The Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant (SIWDG) is a new award that will be offered to students at Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) institutions, such as SWGTC, who are receiving the HOPE Grant and enrolled in one of the three eligible majors. These three programs, which have been identified as high demand careers in Georgia, are Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), Commercial Truck Driving and Practical Nursing (PN).

Luckily for southwest Georgia residents, SWGTC offers two of these qualifying programs, the ECCE and PN diploma programs, at both their Thomasville and Grady county locations.

Students will automatically qualify for the SIWDG Award if they meet these three criteria:

  1. fully admitted to a TCSG institution, such as SWGTC
  2. enrolled in early childhood care and education (diploma), practical nursing (diploma) or commercial truck driving (technical certificate of credit)
  3. receiving the Hope Grant in that same term

The HOPE Grant is an award given to Georgia residents enrolled in a certificate or diploma program at a TCSG institution. The qualifying GPA for the HOPE Grant will be changing from a 3.0 to a 2.0 in Fall Semester 2013.

This Workforce Development Grant will provide ECCE and PN students taking nine hours or more $500 per semester and those taking eight credit hours or less $250.

The HOPE GED Grant, HOPE Grant, and SIWDG Award can be awarded in the same term, if all other eligibility requirements are met up to cost of attendance. High school students in dual enrollment programs are not eligible for the SIWDG Award.

Fall Semester 2013 begins August 20, 2013.
