SWGTC’s Air Conditioning Tech Program purchases new software

2014 is already off to a great start for the Air Conditioning Technology (AC) Program at Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC).  The A/C program recently purchased and implemented Simutech Systems Software which they believe will take learning to the next level for A/C students at SWGTC.

According to their website, “Simutech Systems, Inc is the world leader in providing HVACR training software to the education industry. Simutech computer-based simulators are invaluable tools for providing realistic ‘hands-on’ service training and theory-of-operation of generic HVAC and refrigeration systems.”

Simutech Software is designed to mimic a typical service call. Instructors input a typical problematic scenario that they choose from a list of situations included in the program. The student then observes the reported symptoms, and, based on their application of classroom-taught theory, attempts to diagnose the simulated problem. The software allows the student to select typical tools to “fix” the problem. Students must repeat the troubleshooting process, while being timed, until the repair is successful.

“When students are solving problems on this software it really takes them back to the fundamentals that we teach in the classroom. They can jump back and forth from one problem to another and get as much practice as they want. These drills are designed to prepare students for what they will encounter in the field on real units. They are exposed to the troubleshooting process with Simutech, and will hopefully benefit from the extra experience, even if it was simulated through a computer software,” commented Craig Hamilton, SWGTC Air Conditioning Technology instructor.

The A/C students are finding it helpful to exercise the classroom principles on computers before the hands-on learning begins in the lab.

“Simutech software allows us to be hands-on before going out and working on the real unit. The software gives us real situations and real symptoms like a customer would. We can walk through the entire process from receiving the service call to implementing a solution to the problem,” commented Tim Andrews, SWGTC Air Conditioning Technology student.

The Air Conditioning Technology program is now accepting new students. For more information about the Air Conditioning Technology program at SWGTC, please contact Glenn Mobley or Craig Hamilton at 229-225-5084 or email gmobley@southwestgatech.edu or chamilton@southwestgatech.edu.

SWGTC offers more than 80 certificate, diploma, and degree programs. Many of these programs provide training for some of the nation’s fastest-growing career fields including Nursing, Automotive Technology, Clinical Laboratory Technology, and Criminal Justice Technology.  For more information on the Radiology Technology program at SWGTC please call 229-225-4096 or visit www.southwesgatech.edu.

Summer Semester 2014 begins May 19th. Don’t wait, ENROLL TODAY!
