SWGTC Alumnus Thrives in Nursing and Local Business
Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) is proud to have Rick Kennedy of Cairo on their list of alumni. Kennedy graduated from SWGTC’s nursing program six years ago, and has been working as a registered nurse (RN) ever since. Not only has he thrived in his career as a nurse in the emergency department, but he has also managed to own and operate his own business too. Kennedy and his wife, Sherri, have owned local company Peace, Love and Scrubz, LLC, for the last three years. The couple bought the business, formerly known as Scribbidy Scrubs, from friends, changed the business’ name and are thriving in their downtown Cairo location, right across from Center Drugs. At the store, they stock scrub tops and bottoms in a large variety of brands, colors and prints.
Kennedy commented, “Just because a healthcare professional is limited to wearing scrubs at work, does not mean he/she doesn’t want to look good, and incorporate some variety into their wardrobe. We sell several brands that other local stores don’t carry, and try to offer a wide array of choices.”
The Kennedys never dreamed of getting into the scrub business, but the opportunity presented itself, and has brought them much success.
Rick got into nursing the same way he got into scrubs – by chance. And he has managed to find success when it comes to nursing as well. He didn’t have a childhood dream of becoming a nurse one day, and the profession had never even crossed his mind. In fact, he had never really considered going to college at all. However, after losing a potential promotion to one of his co-workers because he was enrolled in college, Rick decided it was time for a change. He enrolled at SWGTC that next semester, and began taking the pre-requisites for the business management program.
While taking those pre-business courses, a friend asked him if he had ever thought about nursing, and proceeded to tell him about the high demand for RNs. So Rick explored the field of nursing for the first time ever.
“I shadowed some nurses at the hospital and it seemed like such a rewarding career. I wanted the opportunity to have that personal connection with others and the ability to touch peoples’ lives,” Kennedy said.
Even though nursing was a far cry from his old jobs working with machinery and equipment, he decided to go for it.
“I knew I wanted to stay at SWGTC. I liked the small class sizes and personalized instruction. And luckily for me they had a nursing program,” said Kennedy. “I also knew I needed a place with affordable tuition because I was going to be paying for my education out-of-pocket, and wasn’t going to be able to work while in school,” he added.
Rick got accepted into the program, completed it, and graduated in 2008.
“I think part of the reason I succeeded in nursing school was the caring instructors. They always made me feel like it was important to them that I succeed,” added Kennedy.
Now Rick gives back to his alma matter by offering SWGTC’s Associate of Science in Nursing (RN) students discount packages on their required clinical uniforms as well as gift certificates upon graduation. He also offers various student packages for the practical nursing students on SWGTC’s Cairo campus, and students at Thomas University.
Kennedy adds, “We try to do whatever we can to give back to the community and to strive to offer superb customer service.”
Peace, Love, and Scrubz is all about catering to their customer’s needs. When Archbold Medical Center adopted a new color coded scrub system to help patients identify varying clinical positions, they adjusted their inventory to meet those needs. They also offer a layaway program, create custom packages for local businesses/organizations, and accept WIA vouchers.
Peace, Love, and Scrubz is located at 210 2nd Avenue SE in Cairo and are open from Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. -6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Stop in and see them some time!
