SWGTC Names Abigail Carter New Dean of Academic Affairs
Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) recently appointed Abigail Carter as a Dean of Academic Affairs.
In her new role, Carter is responsible for both administrative and instructional tasks as well as planning, evaluation and supervision for all programs within the Schools of Business, Professional Services, and Industrial Technology. Providing leadership to the faculty and increasing student retention rates are a few of her personal goals.
“As Dean of Academic Affairs, this position will afford me the opportunity to lead and grow as SWGTC continues to grow. Similar to Julia Roberts, I feel that ‘I'm just an ordinary person who has an extraordinary job,’” commented Carter.
Carter received her bachelor’s degree in Information Systems from Auburn University before continuing her educational journey at Brenau University where she received a Master of Business Administration in Management and Information Systems. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Education degree.
Carter has over 17 years of experience in the higher education arena. In her previous position, as an interim Vice President of Academic Affairs for Columbus Technical College, she managed seven academic divisions, six academic deans, and over 250 full-time and adjunct instructors. She was also accountable for the oversight of all fiscal and budgetary matters of academic affairs including fund management, personnel, and the budgeting process. She has also held many other positions in higher education, such as Dean of General Studies and the School of Business, Director of Cisco Networking Academy, and instructor. Within all of these roles, Carter was responsible for providing leadership and direction to business and computer information systems faculty to increase student retention. Along with her exceptional service as an educator, she is also a United States Veteran.
“Southwest Georgia Technical College welcomes Abigail Carter as the new Dean for the Schools of Business, Professional Services, and Industrial Technology. Abigail comes to SWGTC with exceptional experience in community college education having served at two other technical colleges before moving to Thomasville. Additionally, her background in Computer Information Systems will serve her well as she promotes the development of more online courses and programs. We welcome her expertise to our administrative leadership team,” commented Dr. Annie McElroy, Vice President of Academic Affairs at SWGTC.
SWGTC offers more than 80 certificate, diploma, and degree programs. Many of these programs provide training for some of the nation’s fastest-growing career fields including Nursing, Automotive Technology, Clinical Laboratory Technology, and Emergency Medical Technology.
