SWGTC Presents Knowledge for College – a Community Information Session

Are you interested in going back to school? Do you have a child getting ready to apply to college?  Or maybe you just want to take some general education classes to transfer later?  If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you need to attend Knowledge for College, a free community information series on ‘all things college’ presented by Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC).

The public is invited to attend the second session of SWGTC’s Knowledge for College on Tuesday, January 28th, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. At this FREE event SWGTC staff will review what one needs to know if preparing to apply for college.

“Applying for college can be overwhelming for many prospective students. It can be a challenging process, and receiving federal financial aid can take longer than many think due to the often-changing federal regulations. Our goal with Knowledge for College is to prepare our community with the information they need to apply, and to serve as an accommodating resource when it comes to higher education,” commented Joyce Halstead, Vice President for Student Affairs at SWGTC.

At this event, attendees will learn not only how to complete a college application, but also how to apply for federal financial aid.

“Many new college students, and their parents, find that applying for FAFSA, or financial aid, is much more difficult than they expected. This Knowledge for College session will give attendees a basic understanding of the financial aid process, give them an opportunity to ask questions, and let them get a head start on applying. We believe this knowledge will make the process of enrolling for college smoother and help the students to be more successful once they are in,” commented Amy Scoggins, SWGTC Director of Financial Aid.

Wanda Hancock, SWGTC Director of Admissions, will give an in-depth review of the admissions process, including all aspects of a complete application and other necessary documentation.

“We are very excited to share admissions and testing information to prospective college students.  We recognize that applying for college can be a daunting, and often intimidating task, and we want our community to know that we are here to help! Hopefully, by attending this event, potential students will have a clear understanding of all the essential steps to becoming a college student,” commented Hancock.

There will also be a special focus on SWGTC’s School of Industrial Technology. This School features the following programs: Air Conditioning Technology, Automotive Technology, Drafting Technology, Electrical Systems Technology, Land, Forest, Wildlife Management, and Welding & Joining Technology. Instructors from each will be on hand to provide program-specific information and answer questions.

This event is not only for potential SWGTC students, but anyone considering college in the near future.

Knowledge for College will be at Southwest Georgia Technical College (main campus in Thomasville) on Tuesday, January 28th, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Health Science Building (Building B) Lecture Hall. Light refreshments will be served.

If you have questions about Knowledge for College, please call Betsy Forehand, SWGTC Recruiter, at (229) 227-2574.

Summer Semester 2014 begins May 19th. Don’t wait, enroll today!
