SWGTC Associate of Science Nursing Students Pinned
On December 12, 2013, Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) held a pinning ceremony where 30 Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) students were honored. The ceremony commemorated the students’ successful completion of their nursing coursework and clinical rotations. Now, pending passage of their board exams, these students will be ready to join the workforce as registered nurses.
“This class was a strong one, with exceptional clinical talent. We are proud to provide our local workforce with a great group of nurses! I look forward to great things from them all,” commented Tammy Bryant, RN, MSN, SWGTC ASN Program Director.
In this pinning ceremony, which symbolizes the rite of passage into the nursing profession, each student received a pin and a small lamp. The pin is used to remind students of their purpose to serve the sick and infirmed. The lamp portion of the ceremony serves as a tribute to Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern-day nursing. In the 1800s Nightingale was known as the "lady with the lamp," tending to the sick while carrying a lamp to light the way. At the ceremony, students recited the Nightingale pledge, stating their dedication to upholding the standards of nursing.
The students that received pins were: Joy Agbali, Maryann Barnes, Jennifer Carroll, Jada Carter, Hali Garretson, Stephanie Haaren, Ashley Hall, Christine Hall, Barbara Hayes, Maria Hernandez, Robert Jones, Ciera Lewis, Megan Long, Jacqueline Martin, Lynnetta McCoy, Ashley McDaniel, Brandi Moorman, Kayla Mullis, Jessica Oxendine, Pamela Pollette, Melissa Proietti, Mary Rich, Tiffany Sandiford, Ashley Saunders, Nancy Sumner, Margaret Thorsson, Emily Thrift, Bridgette Walker, Amanda West, and Matthew Wharton.
The following awards were given at the ceremony: Florence Nightingale Award - Ashley McDaniel & Brandi Moorman; Highest Exit Exam Award - Jacqueline Martin; Clinical Excellence Award – Tiffany Sandiford & Nancy Sumner; and Archbold Leadership Award – Hali Garretson & Amanda West.
