SWGTC Student Attendance
Tardies
Tardies and partial day absences will be shown as hours missed and will accumulate during the semester. Persons reporting to class after their designated time of arrival will be charged one hour for each hour and/or partial hour of tardiness. Students leaving early will be charged only for the actual time missed provided the instructor is notified prior to departure.
Absences
Each student is responsible for maintaining satisfactory attendance once enrolled in a program of study. Students are expected to be in class and to be on time each day. In cases of unavoidable absences, it is the student’s responsibility to contact his/her instructor to make up all work and/or assignments.
When a student accumulates absences equal to five (5) percent of the total contact time of the class, the instructor will issue an attendance deficiency notice to the student. The student must then report to his/her advisor/instructor to get the notice signed and to receive counseling prior to continuing class.
Upon the accumulation of absences equal to ten (10) percent of the total contact time of the class, the student will be dismissed from school. Students who are dismissed due to absenteeism may appeal for readmission in writing through the appropriate Dean for Academic Affairs. The following procedure will be used to appeal a dismissal due to absenteeism:
1. The student is responsible for contacting the instructor and requesting to be readmitted to class.
2. The instructor will provide to the student a signed Student Appeal for Readmission, a program of work, and an attendance sheet.
3. The student must then make an appointment with the appropriate Dean for Academic Affairs for the appeal review.
4. If approved, the student will be returned to class.
Students who accumulate absences totaling twenty (20) percent of the total contact time of the class during a semester will be dismissed from class with no appeal available. Students dismissed due to absenteeism may reapply for admission at the beginning of the next semester.
Each student is responsible for notifying his/her instructor if he/she must leave class before his/her designated class ends. A student who must leave class early must notify his/her instructor prior to departure.
Students will not be excused from class to complete forms, papers, or to tend to financial aid matters. This should be done during lunch, break, or after class.
Appeals
Appeals made for readmission through the appropriate Dean must be made in a timely manner as each class missed puts the student farther behind in class work and jeopardizes possible readmission. Students dismissed due to absences may attend class while an appeal is pending.
The Dean(s) will act promptly upon receipt of the student's appeal for readmission. The student will be allowed to continue in class only if the appeal is approved. The Dean(s) will consider such factors as work ethics, attitude, academic status, and circumstances relevant to each appeal.
In extenuating circumstances, the Vice President for Academic Affairs or Dean(s) may grant excused leave for up to an additional ten (10) percent of scheduled class time during a semester. Excused leave requests must be requested in advance by the student's advisor and may be requested at any time regardless of the number of absences. Excused leave will not be calculated into the time accumulated for withdrawal from a program.
Responsibility
The Vice President for Academic Affairs has the overall responsibility for ensuring this policy is implemented.
