SWGTC of Grady County

In 2001, Grady County and Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) joined together to meet the growing need for more technical education in the community. Initially the SWGTC of Grady County only offered one program, Practical Nursing, and was housed in a modular donated by Grady General Hospital. Grady County and SWGTC realized there was a need for more comprehensive instructional facilities in the county. SWGTC of Grady County is now located on the former Roddenberry Crossroads Farm, after the Roddenberry family made the land available for purchase to the Joint Development Authority. After the purchase of the land, it was deeded to the Technical College System of Georgia. Southwest Georgia Technical College broke ground in May of 2004 with a crowd of enthusiastic Grady County residents and officials. The campus was completed in 2008 and opened that September offering four programs: Practical Nursing, Criminal Justice Technology, Business Administrative Technology, and Early Childhood Care and Education, in addition to general education core courses. Southwest Georgia Technical College of Grady County continues to grow each year and is an integral part of the Cairo community.

Business Administrative Technology:

Business Administrative Technology, which can be completed in five semesters, is designed to prepare graduates for employment in a variety of positions in today’s technology-driven workplaces. The Business Administrative Technology program provides learning opportunities, which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the areas of business administration and business technology. Graduates of the program receive a Business Administrative Technology diploma with a specialty in either Business Administrative Assistant or Medical Administrative Assistant.

Criminal Justice Technology:

The Criminal Justice Technology program, which can be completed in five semesters, is a sequence of courses that prepares students for criminal justice professions. To qualify for the program, students must be high school graduates or equivalent (GED). Students will develop the academic, occupational, and professional knowledge and skills necessary for careers in the criminal justice field through a combination of criminal justice theory and practical application. For the convenience of Criminal Justice students, courses in the program are offered both in the classroom setting and online. Program graduates receive a Criminal Justice Technology Associate of Applied Science degree. This degree prepares graduates to pursue diverse opportunities in the corrections, security, investigative, and police administration fields.

Early Childhood Education and Care:

The Early Childhood Care and Education Diploma program is a sequence of courses designed to prepare students for a variety of careers in the field of early childhood education. The program emphasizes a blend of early childhood care and education theory combined with practical application as well as limited general core competencies. SWGTC of Grady County offers the full array of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECE) classes. The cozy campus not only offers all of the academic opportunities of larger campuses, but gives each student individualized attention, optimizing the learning experience. One thing that makes the ECE program at SWGTC of Grady County unique is that each student works closely with his or her advisor throughout the program to ensure the student obtains their educational goals. Most of the classes are hands-on and are based on best practices in education. In addition, we have a large online component which provides busy students with convenience and accessibility. Graduates will gain the qualifications necessary for employment in early care and education settings including child care centers, Head Start, and Georgia school systems. The ECE program can be completed in four semesters.

Practical Nursing:

The Practical Nursing program, which can be completed in five semesters,  is designed to prepare students to write the NCLEX-PN for licensure as practical nurses. The program prepares graduates to give competent nursing care. This is done through a selected number of academic and occupational courses providing a variety of techniques and materials necessary to assist the student in acquiring the needed knowledge and skills to give competent care. A variety of clinical experiences is planned so that theory and practice are integrated under the guidance of the clinical instructor. Program graduates receive a practical nursing diploma and have the qualifications of an entry-level practical nurse.

Adult Education/GED®:
